.Drunk

Dick was his name.

Homeless, but back then we said “bum."

Reaching for a bottle of kerosene

used to start a fire in a coal stove,

he drank.

No one stopped him.

He was coughing, gagging, and spitting up.

Over in the corner a laughing man

with a jaw full of tobacco

ignored a giant tumor.

Jim Boggs was born and raised in Harlan County Kentucky. Boggs spent several years on the radio, but uses poetry to expand the beauty of communication. He considers himself a master of the monologue. Currently, Jim resides in Hazard, Kentucky, where he is working on a regional poetry book, “Kentucky Twilight.” .
